Musings about the AP exam writing topics

It has been common in past years for the AP test to reflect significant anniversaries in choosing written prompts.

Today marks the beginning of the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. You might want to review this material in anticipation of a written question.

This year is also the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball, a review of key civil rights events from the 1940s might not be such a bad idea. Hey, you had sports as a DBQ topic last year– lightning might strike twice. It’s also 50 years since Strom Thurman’s 24 hour filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and the 50th anniversary of the desegregation crisis in Little Rock.

It’s also the 50th anniversary of the Eisenhower Doctrine, which increased US involvement in the Middle East, and since we’re currently engaged there, the history of US involvement in the Middle East might be a good review question.

It’s the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the US slave trade.

You might want to review these key dates and the surrounding events.
