EXTRA CREDIT! EXTRA CREDIT!

You have no doubt seen the quotes on the ceiling of the classroom and in the hallway.

I would like you to choose one quote of your own from the writers covered in Chapter 15, and illuminate it on a separate piece of paper. Try to avoid quotes which have already been posted. You may use other American writers of the period who were not covered in the text. This will be worth extra credit.

Illuminate each quote on an 8×11 piece of paper. Preference will be given to quotes which are illuminated by hand rather than on computer. Let your artistic side out! Bring these to class by Tuesday. I will give no credit for simply scrawling a saying on a piece of notebook paper. These are supposed to be well-designed as well asthought-provoking

Don’t know what “Illuminated” means? Look it up. Think “scriptorium.”

  1. 1) “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” Washington Irving
    — I just really relate to this quote because I believe it is amazingly true. It is not only true, but is also written in such a convincing way that if you didn’t believe it before, you would probably believe it after reading it.

2)“The Americans . . . are almost ignorant of the art of music, one of the most elevating, innocent and refining of human tastes, whose influence on the habits and morals of a people is of the most beneficial tendency.” James Fenimore Cooper
    — It’s just true! Music is the greatest art, at least for me. Music is my passion, and I know that this quote is true because it does benefit me. No matter what type of mood I am in, there is a type of music for me to be able to express my feelings.

3)“Loveliest of lovely things are they, On earth, that soonest pass away” William Cullen Bryant
    — Again, another quote I believe is true. Although I have been fairly lucky myself that the lovely people and things in my life have not passed away yet, I have seen it happen to other people. It musy be horrible. It seems like the good things in life don’t always last for as long as you want them to.

“I am as bad as the worst, but, thank God, I am as good as the best” Walt Whitman – I belive this quote is true in that everyone has their bad traits that are really bad and they can’t do at all but them they have these amazing traits that are fantastic and offsets the bad ones.

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could” Ralph Waldo Emerson – I strongly believe in this quote in that there are only so many hours in a day and you did what you could. If you have to finish something in the morning that is okay.

“Truth, after all, wears a different face to everybody, and it would be too tedious to wait till we all agreed” James Russell Lowe – I like this qoute becasue in English our topic for the semester is What is Truth? and I think it is a good quote on truth!

    1. “A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles.” -Washington Irving
If someone is happy, they rub off on others the same way that if someone is sad it rubs off on others too. One who is glad does nice things for others to make them glad

“Be an opener of doors.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson
If people do not embrace life and its oppertunities they will never thrive. You must open doors before you gan go anywhere.

“The man who is dissatified with himself, what can he do?” -Henry David Thoreau
People will not be able to love others until they love themselves. When people are satified with themselves they can achieve full potential.

  4. “A wounded deer leaps the highest. ” -Emily Dickinson
The deer leaps the highest because he is in the most pain. Or this could mean since the deer knows he is about to die, he tries the hardest because he knows he doesn’t have time in the short remainder of his life to not give his all.

“For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are those ‘It might have been.'” -John Greenleaf Whittier
I agree with this quote. I hate when you go back and look at something and then you think of all the things you could of done/said and you realize not doing those things was the dumbest decision of your life.

“Money is the root of all evil, and yet it is such a useful root that we cannot get on without it any more than we can without potatoes.” Louisa May Alcott
Agreed! If you think about it, the reason for most bad things is money. Why do people kidnap people? Ransom money. Why do people steal things? They have no money. Money, can’t live with it, can’t live without it.

“Folks never understand the folks they hate.”
    James Russell Lowell
I like this quote because it is so true. People only hate others because they do not understand everything about them.

“The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.”
    Oliver Wendell Holmes
I like this qoute because where we are doesnt matter but where we are going does.

“What other dungeon is so dark as one’s own heart! What jailer so inexorable as one’s self!”
    Nathaniel Hawthorne
I agree with this qoute because you are your worst critic. You are the hardest on yourself.

“a friend is one before whom i may think aloud”
    -ralph waldo emerson

this is a useful thing to keep in mind (especially with people our age).a true friend should be someone you don’t have to hide your feelings from.

“as we grow old..the beauty steals inward.”
    -ralph waldo emerson

ha, this sounds like something on a card. but it is true, as you get older you realize what’s more important and become a better person even as your body looses its..youthful appearance.

“do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
    -ralph waldo emerson

don’t follow where everyone else has gone. have your own experiences to share with others.

uuhm i dunno if i did this right im kinda confused but you know as ol’ Ralphy said..”dont be too timid and squeamish about your actions”

all of my quotes are by emerson and i picked these because they are simple and at the same time powerful and make very good points.

“Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.”
    Henry David Thoreau

“However mean your life is, meet it and live it: do not shun it and call it hard names. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Things do not change, we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts. God will see that you do want society.”
    Henry David Thoreau

“My friend is one… who take me for what I am.”
    Henry David Thoreau

    1. I chose this quote because I believe that way too many people live their lives through their morals, and I think this quote gives insight on a different way to live.

    2. I think this quote is genius because Thoreau was foreshadowing how society should be structured in the future.

    3. Personally, I enjoy this quote because that’s how friends are supposed to be.

“How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live”
    Henry David Thoreau
i like this quote because it illustrates that a person has to live life in order to be able to write about it–or tell other people how to live it.

“Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson
I liked this quote because when people use their minds and talents, amazing things can happen, like revolutions and inventions

As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.
    Henry David Thoreau
to kill time would be to waste it but a person needs to use it productively–the idea is to use spare time to do something that a person wants to do; you can’t take time out of forever without messing up the big picture

    1. “For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.”
    -Ralph Waldo Emerson
*This quote shows loud and clear that anger is a waste of time. Time is spent however we choose, so why choose anger when we can just be happy?

    2. “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”
    -Ralph Waldo Emerson
*This quote is the same as treating others the way you would want to be treated. If I am nice to someone, I expect them to be nice back. R-e-s-p-e-c-t.

    3. “There is a certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse; as I have found in travelling in a stagecoach, that it is often a comfort to shift one’s position and be bruised in a new place.”
    -Washington Irving
*This quote means that if we don’t change or go through trials, we will never learn anything and we will never grow. Stepping out of our comfort zones and risking failure will only make us stronger for the future.

    P.S. 7th hour rocks
